With millions of people relocating across the globe, it is common for everyone to hire the services of a relocation service provider for hassle free relocation. These service providers are making huge money from their business. In such a situation, it is a known fact about the presence of scammer relocation service providers. Today, there a number of complaints about fraudulent movers who are known to cheat you on your belongings and money. It is very essential that you know how to identify a fraud from a legitimate relocation service provider.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) of the Department of Transportation in the United States has now initiated a partnership with many law enforcement agencies, moving industry and the consumer groups to protect you and your belongings from scam during relocation. You have to know your rights and responsibilities put forth by the FMCSA before you relocate, in order to be safe.
Your first responsibility is to select a reputed moving agency to carry your household goods and understand their terms and conditions of the contract. The mover you select must have a USDOT number assigned and registered with the FMCSA. The agency must also have a proper rank of insurance. The information provided by the mover must include the following in terms of relocation documents.
· An estimate in writing including the description of each service he will perform. Never settle for oral estimates.
· A list of the services he will perform in the form of ‘order for services’. This list must also include the dates when your items will be packed, picked and delivered.
· A contract between you and the mover in the form of a receipt for your belongings duly signed and given to you by the mover before the mover leaves the original place.
· A written inventory describing the condition of each of your belongings before shipping.
However, problems are known to occur irrespective of the care taken in planning. If there is a problem regarding loss or damage of property, request the company’s form for claim. Once you file your claim, your damage or loss fee must be delivered within 9 months. A copy of the claim in writing should also be sent to the FMCSA for legal remedies, if any. Thus knowing your rights and responsibilities, you can be assured of a hassle free relocation process that can be made memorable.
