Sacramento- The Ultimate Fun City

The Sacramento metropolitan area includes Roseville, Placerville, Yuba City, Elk Grove, Placerville, El Dorado and Sacramento counties. The city of Sacramento came into existence during the great Californian gold rush, is called “America’s most integrated city”.

The Gold Rush started on January 24 1858, when James Wilson Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill. This brought people into California from all over the world with many different cultures.

The people who live in and around Sacramento participate in public art programs, jazz festivals and many other fun filled activities. It is these people who make Sacramento a city rich in culture and personality.

The oldest part of the town is Old Sacramento which has historic buildings dating back to the 1860’s. The ‘Big Four Building’ built in 1852 in now home to many government offices. These historic buildings are preserved, restored and reconstructed and are now substantial tourist attractions.

Waterfront in Old Sacramento region is known to offer a host of activities that include riding and touring on 19th century boats. Sacramento is also home to many theatre venues like Community Center Theatre and Memorial Auditorium with Wells Faro Pavilion as a recent addition.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission established in 1977 provides several art programs in the city. The Crocker Art Museum is one of the finest. A number of full season concerts are presented by groups like the California Musical Theatre, the Sacramento Philharmonic, the Sacramento Children’s chorus and the Sacramento Master Singers.

Basketball, football and baseball are the active sports with several league matches hosted in addition to national and international clashes. Professional tennis is represented by the Capitals of the World Team Tennis League.

The zoo in Sacramento is home to some of the most exotic animals put up in their natural habitat. The animals include snow leopards, jaguars, red pandas, lemurs, chimpanzees, zebras, and many others.

Sacramento is home to several shopping malls and hundreds of boutiques and specialty shops. Old Sacramento is popular for its atmospheric shopping area.

The Sacramento Chinese Culture Foundation established in 1986 supports and promotes Chinese culture. Yuba City is known for its largest Sikh (a popular Asian Indian community) population in America. Each year, the first Sunday of November, Sikhs from all over the world arrive at Yuba City for a parade to commemorate the receipt of their Holy Scripture, the Guru Grantha Sahib.

The region of Placerville called Apple Hill is a center for quality wine production. Placerville is a historic community from the gold rush days and accordingly there are many old buildings from this period. Snowfall at Placerville is a well known tourist attraction.

The events which you can look forward to now are:

  • Westfield tree Lighting West Field Downtown Plaza on 7th and K Streets on November 27th at 5 pm.
  • State Capitol Tree Lighting on 10th and L Streets at 4:30 pm on December 1st.
  • 17th annual lighted boat parade at Capital City Yacht Club on December 5th at 6:30 pm
  • Second Saturday art walk at Midtown Sacramento on December 12th between 6 and 10 pm.
  • California State Capitol museum Holiday music on 10th and L streets from November 30th to December 23rd.
  • New Year’s Eve Sky Spectacular at Front and L streets Waterfront Park on December 31st from 6 pm to after midnight.
